you can put a Xanga Lock on your
site… so that visitors *have* to be signed in to view your weblog, photoblog or
profile! (If you’re wondering about your photoblog, don’t worry – we’ll have that
covered shortly as
well.)
We noticed a while ago
that people were using JavaScript to lock out unsigned in visitors;
it’s a neat idea, but pretty easy to get around (you just have to turn
off JavaScript 
). So we
built native support for this feature right into Xanga! If
you’re interested, you can activate your Xanga Lock
here:
It’s a great way to make
your site just a bit more private – and while you’re at it, it will
hide your site from any outside search engines.

I love this feature, this is really great… but will there ever be a feature where we can keep certain xangans from reading our blogs? I know there is protected posting and all, but for the basic Xanga users they are only limited to about ten people who can read their protected posts! Just wondering…

Kudos to the team for the lock – that’ll work nicely.
Other features you may want to consider (some are repeats, but good ideas bear repeating):
- Individual user blocking
- Per-entry locks
- IP logging (helps when you have people with no recognizable user information commenting on your site)
- User-tracking list (possibly implement on a per-entry basis; perhaps when the signed-in lock is instantiated, have that activate a tracking log). I’ve seen a third-party script, but it’s clumsy and less than reliable.

i think it’s absolutely silly to lock people out who are not members. What’s the point of having a blog if you don’t want people to read it, makes NO sense to me. I don’t understand the privacy issue.. why have a PUBLIC blog on the WORLD-WIDE-Web if you want to keep it private? plus, we already have Protected posts anyway.

Not really very good or useful IMO.
What would be useful is to be able to totally block specific xangans, IP addresses, browser ID, etc. A lot of people have problems with the cyber stalker type mentality and developing something like that (that can’t be easily thwarted by just turning off Javascript) it would allow people the chance to get out.. make new friends/acquaintances online… still share their feelings/thoughts/etc….. w/out their cyberstalker (ex-boyfriends, ex-husbands, ex-wives, ex-friends) hanging over their every word. I personally don’t care if I share my thoughts/problems/etc to a bunch of strangers.. They don’t know me. They may judge me but they’ll never try to use it against me. But for those you DO know you.. who will try to use things against you (even something as simple as “I went to the store today”.. it’s a bad thing. Not being able to write these thigns, as we want– is a form of censorship.. and it really sucks.
This problem is more widespread then you think.
And that’s what the Javascripts and current “blocks” are trying to do.
Not just block anonomyous users.

But honestly, can i block someone that read my xanga even he is a xanga user? The block function is just a function to stop someone making comments for me.
Now i use a source code to block him out, and it works, but when do you guys start to improve the block function? At least I can just specifily block a person that I dont want but not typed-in codes. Heap of thanks for reading my comment!

Mary, this is related to a problem I emailed you about 5 months ago, and again this week – when you use a skin and someone on your protected list visits your site, they cannot see your protected posts. I have not received a response from you, so I am hoping you will read this and check your email. The Xanga Lock is a partial solution to the problem if the only reason a person posts protected is to keep the outside world out. But, still, the bug needs to be resolved. Hope to get a response from you very soon. Thanks for the new feature.

I’ve been using a tracker to block out unwanted viewers. When you say that part about the JavaScript, is that what a tracker uses? I have a semi-cyberstalker who is already a Xanga member (his personal site is pretty nasty against me). I’m pretty sure my tracker has been successful at blocking him, but now you have me worried! I don’t want him to have access to any of my blogs. I’ve considered switching blog sites but I’m sure he would just find me again. He’s already found me on a photo webpage and downloads my photos.
Will you have a tool like this to block other xangans in addition to ‘unknowns’?

I think it’s a good idea, but I really wish xanga could have the option of allowing non-xanga users to comment. I have a lot of friends who read my blog who don’t have xanga and they find it annyoing that they have to be a member to comment.

I don’t think this is a very efficient way to do this. Are there plans for more expandability on this feature? For instance, lock out only a certain section of posts, lock out only posts – keep other features public (photos, reviews, etc..), disable search engine crawls only, etc…?? I like the idea, but how exactly does it work? Are unsigned in users displayed your custom profile still? Can you customize the screen separately that ppl not signed in would see? Or do they just get a generic error telling them to log in?

RSS you need to block the RSS as well! I mean, what’s the point if i can simply go to http://www.xanga.com/username/rss?
Also what you really need is an ip blocker, I mean, someone made a feed aggregator on livejournal for my rss and while lj gives you their ip in order to block it, doesn’t really help if i can’t use that.

A wonderful idea!
I’d like to suggest a possibility- that users have the ability to keep a log of EVERY visit EVERY xanga account makes to their page. I am sure you have heard of the recent dateline NBC issues concerning online pages such as Myspace- and xanga has even been mentioned in other places as one of the areas of ‘danger’. I think this is just one of the many reasons the security of being able to 1) lock your page for xanga users only, and 2) tell exactly which users visit your page, helps to get a grasp of exactly WHO out there is seeing what you wrote/posted. I do not believe this would violate user’s privacy- because if you don’t want someone to know you went to their site, then do not log in. BUT, if a person has the xanga lock on, that means someone not logged in cannot visit unknown.
I highly, highly recommend this suggestion be consiered in some way. There are positive aspects to this as well- people who think, perhaps, that nobody reads their blog (who don’t bother with counters, at least) can actually see who does or does not read. Again, users who would protest about ‘privacy violations’ should put their foot in their mouths- by stepping onto someone else’s page and reading their work you are stepping into their personal space. With the xanga lock active, I think that it is fair to say “If you visit on your xanga, I can see you did.” Perhaps this would lead towards the eventual ability- if ever given- to specifically decide which xangans do or do not have access.
If this were implimented, it would mean that eventually, I could keep my site open to all xangans- and if I am uncomfortable or wary about certain ones that my log tells me ARE visitting I can just click “block” on them specifically. If they create another profile and just sign back in- I can block that as well. The modern digital age is a wonderful place, but quickly becoming a place that needs more security than just a lock and key- it needs alarm systems and IDs to protect ourselves, and those on here who are vulnerable as well.

Pretty cool. I always wanted something like this, despite the fact that some of my non-xanga friends knows my page. But it’s all good =) Another reason why I’m really happy about this is because if you were to type one of my friends’ xanga username on Yahoo!, my website is the first result to show up. Not exactly a good thing. Whatever we post up here is for people to read at our own risk, but when it ends up on search engines, that’s just a bit annoying.

thank you. it’s true that deactivating javascript will circumvent a lot of those efforts, which is why i enclosed all my stuff in a div w/ display:none which only gets set to display:block via javascript. so going into sans-javascript “stealth mode” will still leave stuff hidden. of course ppl can still view source though. but thx. now you just need a tracker, and you can kill off these cottage industries which have fastened themselves to you like remoras lol.

On the contrary, I wish that people could sign my blog without having to get a xanga id. I like to get comments, but some people won’t sign up for another new ID. So, since Xanga doesn’t allow for ‘anonymous’ comments, they don’t comment at all. I like my Xanga space, but I’ve thought about moving elsewhere because of this comment problem. =( I would even sign up for premium (gladly!) if I could get ‘anonymous’ comment ability.

That’s fantastic…having used my own JavaScript lock for a while I’d realized a determined stalker could still access the page…Xanga has obviously employed some of the industry’s best to keep its position as one of the innovators. It’s exciting to be a member of such a vibrant and aesthetically pleasing online community site!

the great thing about this is that if you have people reading your xanga that don’t want you to know they are, your xanga tracker or whatever you have will track ALL visitors now, instead of just ones that are logged on. hahahaha…..this is a wonderful invention. i just found out my ex is still keeping tabs after 6 months.

Can we get a feature where we can just block the search engines? I have a few friends who may sometimes read my site as a guest without signing in. I’d like to be able to let them read without allowing, say, Google, to index my page. Is there any way we could get a similar privacy setting, perhaps using a ROBOTS tag, to tell the indexing search engines to go away while being more hospitable to the occasional guest?
I don’t care if the occasional misbehaving engine crawls my page, but I want to keep mainstream searches out. I’d like to keep my personal pages out of an employer-to-be’s spotlighting efforts if they decide to go Googling on their future candidate. Not that there’s anything incriminating on my xanga, I just don’t want those people in a position to make judgments about my personal life.
I’ll enable “Lock” for now, but if we could get that feature added in as well, I’d be happier using it.

But my tracker says that some Chinese could find my site by Google.CN because I had misspelled it “Tienanman”. So if some Chinese got the truth of Tienanmen from little me, I have done a “mitzvah”.

i have a comment about it. ok, the xanga block is good idea to keep out non- xanga members. but, what if some stranger joins xanga, and then gets into other xanga site, and gets the info from that person, and about that privite thing that people use to block their info about them. well, those stangers are smart enough to open privite stuff. and then one of these days, they get kiddnapped or sexualy abused. i’m just saying that alot of you xangans out there that their are some strangers out their to get you. so you see, i’m not saying that i’m against xanga. i’m just saying find a way to protect the xangans from strangers so they don’t get to them. i just want xanga to be a better place. so if you have any great ideas to keep strangers out of the xanga system, you will make a better and safer site than any other site in the world. trust me, i know.

People just want this because they have trackers and want to know who comes to their site. It gets kind of annoying though, if I see a site that’s kind of interesting looking, and then they say you have to be logged in. It makes me think “fine then, I won’t go to your site.” If they really want more privacy, that’s what protected (or even private) posts are for.

Not a bad idea. What I think it really needs is an IP address logger. I see so many joke xanga accounts sometimes and I’d really like to track them. (I have a tracker that logs that stuff, but an official xanga one would be nicer!) Also, IP blocking. I’ve had people absolutely stalk me with close to 10 accounts that I constantly have to block. IP blocking that doesn’t even allow a user to view the page… yeah, that’s just my two cents.

This is a good idea, but I’m waiting for the opposite. I have friends on various other social networking systems that love to read and would like to comment, but don’t really want to create an account just to leave comments. Will there ever be a way to do anonymous comments or something like that?

This is a good idea, though a better addition to implement this: Rather than having the option of hiding the entirety of your xanga from non-users, there needs to be the option of setting individuals posts to only be visible to logged in users. This way, the site is still public, with more personal posts being hidden from the wandering eye.

This is a dumbass half hearted effort that makes people feel safe, but in reality it’s utterly pointless without some kind of backend control for a more specific blocker.
All anyone has to do to see your site is sign up to Xanga, so I ask Xanga why add this feature. Of course Xanga (Mary or anyone) won’t respond.
What we need is a way to block specific users and specific IP addresses. One can already block non Xanga people and unwanted Xanga people by going ‘protected’ but there is no way to be specific, and this is a serious problem for people with serious stalkers.
Xanga’s poor policy on security and privacy has led to my decision to leave them and take my subscription money with me.
Finally! Now how about that option to have more than one protected list?!? Hehe.

I have the opposite on my mind – I want to be able to allow “guests” to comment on my xanga – is this an option down the track???
In addition to this, how about a tag we can use in CLAF to embed the visitor’s username into the server generated HTML? The goal being that we could potentially use trackers without the need for javascript to be enabled. Or just go all the way and provide a native Xanga tracker.

the only problem with every great idea is the fact that you have to keep on signing in to see that person’s xanga if you sign out (if you’re like me and do not check that box that says “Remember My Password” or something of the matter).

Good idea, however, after applying it and trying to view my own page… I concluded that had I been a non Xangian I would only have had to follow the instructions given ie ”create your own account” and voila, I would have been into the site and would have had the capability to view the blog I was trying to view anyway!
What I do like about this feature though is that it stops your Xanga being listed in search engines.
It’s wonderful! I just used it! It’s just what I wanted!

Actually, another thought…there should be a way to activate all posts as protected or not protected at once. I went through all of them to make them protected awhile back, but with this new feature, I can leave them all as public so any Xangan can read them just not non-Xangans, which is what I want. But I don’t want to have to go back through all of those posts to make them public again. Does this make sense? I hope so. -QL

I’m sure it’s nice for the private bloggers. And it’s good to know you’re looking out for the people hereabouts. Protective measures are always a good thing.
Question for you, though… do you think you (speaking to Xanga gods in general) could work out a way to make protected posting a bit more useable. We’re only allowed one protected ‘group’. So if I want to make a post visible to just three people, I can, but the moment I make the next post protected for six people to see, all six people can see the post I meant for only three people to see. I don’t know if that made sense (what I just tried to say), but can we make more than one protected ‘group’ for protected postings?

I don’t understand how this helps with anything, because when you put the block on, you ask for people to either sign in or get an account. Once they get an account, they have complete access to your xanga site once again, unless you have all of your posts protected, in which case, you can only have 10 members if you are a classic xanga user.
So can you explain to me the point?

What about keeping individual posts from being viewed by non-xanga members?
Sometimes I have things I don’t want absolutely everyone to be able to see, but I don’t want to restrict it to just 10 or less specific people. Other times I have posts that are targeted at anyone who may just wander by. A happy medium for me would be the ability to lock specific posts.

Usability Issue: Why is it “Post Comment” but the feature is “Feedback log”?
I am typically an advanced user, but for some reason the term “Feedback Log” didn’t explain to me it’s purpose. I would suggest calling it “Comment Log” or more preferably “New Comment Notification”
I know at least 3 friends of mine who have expressed desires to move to other blogging sites simply because of not knowing how to recieve email updates for new comments. Go figure.

It is possible to have a page note that the xanga account is only available/viewable to xanga members. I don’t want my non-xanga friends and relatives to think I dropped my xanga blog. Also is it possible to have xanga locks by entry. There are several entries I would like public, but then keep others are open to all xanga, as opposed to protected. BTW I had requested different levels of protected entries at John/Marc’s sites. Thanks.

Why the heck would you want to block your page from non-users? “This will help a lot against sexual predators and such”? I don’t think so. Personally, I feel that this is an over-rated feature that’s gotten more than its share of hype. Sorry, but I don’t express any views other than my own. Xanga is for people to post a sort of public diary, IMHO. You can set more private posts so that only certain people can view them. A better update would be to make Xanga more fun by rewarding people with high numbers of eProps, making eProps harder to get/give, and at least setting the default number of eprops to give to 0.

I’d love to be able to allow more than 10 people on my protected post list. Any chance something like this will ever happen?
How about an option to allow non-xanga subscribed readers to leave comments (like Blogspot, LiveJournal, etc)? This is my biggest complaint with xanga.
An optional feature that allows anonymous and non-xangan comments might also encourage regular readers who happen to be non-xangans (eg. majority of my lazy friends) to participate more fully in the back and forth of between the blogger and the reader which might lead to non-xangans establishing their own updated xangas.

This is a great step!!! Now the question is, when will xanga be so secure that we can completely block other xangers from knowing that we have a site at all. Something such as fackbook does. When you block a user on facebook, they can no longer see that you have a site at all. From their point of view your profile has been deleted and is no longer in excistance. They don’t see comments you put on other people sites, they don’t see you as a member in any groups, and so on and so forth. Its completely secure from them seeing you. This would be a great feature for xanga.

My Xanga Lock is enabled. Yet, you can access my RSS feed without being signed in to Xanga. You thus have a functional equivalent to full access to my site. All it takes is for Google to pick up one dumbass linking to my RSS feed and the protection the Lock affords my site is no more.
Please fix this. I don’t want out-of-network users being able to read my posts, and was under the impression this was already taken care of. Thanks.
