  • XANGA PHOTO TAGS

    Ever
    wish it was easier to share and find cool photos on
    Xanga?      Patrick just made it easier with global
    Photo Tags!  To view all public photos tagged with a certain
    word or phrase, click on the colorful “X” icon next to the individual
    tag on your photoblog.

    Your photos will only appear on the global taglists if: 1) they are “public” and 2) you have tagged them.  If you prefer not to share your photos, you can mark them “private” or remove their tags here.

    We’ll
    soon be launching an All-Time Top Tags list, so if you haven’t been
    doing so already, start adding tags to your photos!  First,
    global Photo Tags… next we’ll be working on Video Tags and even
    Weblog Tags .

    A quick example of Xanga Photo Tags:

  • OK…let me get this straight.
    If we mark a graphic as private because it is a banner, or a background, it does NOT appear on our site if we link to it??? Because “photos marked “private” can only be seen by you” sounds like that is what you’re saying, and that is NOT the case…or my SIR list has been lying about what images they see in comments…and frankly, I don’t care to have EVERY image have to be public in order to use it as a background, IF that is the case.

  • moniet – Thanks for pointing out that confusion! By using the direct image URL, you can use any photo as a background image. However, if you mark a photo “private” in your Photo Manager, others will not be able to access the photo item page (e.g. http://photo.xanga.com/photo.aspx?pic=a566251956043&user=Mary).

    I hope this helps to clarify what I meant: “Your photos will only appear on the global taglists if: 1) they are “public” and 2) you have tagged them. If you prefer not to share your photos, you can mark them “private” or remove their tags.”

  • I have a couple questions.  It seems like only my top tags have the global photo tabs next to them (when I click on “view all tags” those don’t have that tab).  Also, how are my “top tags” determined?  Just curious.  Thanks much.  Pedro.

    Nice work! Well, I was wondering… Is there such a option when you want to shut down your site, you can type in what you want instead of “Username Here” site has been shut down by its owner… Like, I want to shut down my Xanga, but I want to make it say “I shut my Xanga down due to some personal reasons”, instead of site has been shut down by its owner… If there is one, please tell me how to use it!     Can you guys start making a search system within our own blogs? i.e., I wanna relate a post I am typing at the moment to a post I typed three months ago, but to find the exact post I’d need to go through page after page of posts, it would be easier if there’s a search system where i can search “within” my own blog (unlike the current one which search through other people’s as well).

  • Sounds like a good idea, but what if people started tagging their images with the certain words, eg. in order to get traffic, the tags would get useless because you would not be able to actually find what you are looking for with them.

    One of the things I wish for on xanga is the ability to edit the tags on a photo. Could that functionality be available? Right now, when I go to edit a photo, I can’t even see what tags are on the photo, let alone edit the tags.

  • I would like to know if there was a way to disable Footprints and make it an OPTION for xanga users. It is disabling my HTML and my security to keep certain people from viewing my site has not been working since Xanga came out with this Footprints feature. It is not helpful to me at all and as the account owner, I should have the option of having it or not.

    Some suggestions:

    It would be tremendously helpful if you could also tag posts (or more specifically, and forgive the xanga-blasphemy here, if we could have ‘categories’ for posts much like wordpress or typepad offers.) so every post has the option of being filed into X-category or both X&Y-categories and a quick click on a users selection of categories will pull up all posts from said category.

    Also, and this I’ve been really wanting FOREVER, it would be awesome if we could “batch-edit” our xanga posts much like xanga photos. perhaps have an option where posts are listed as, well, a list and not displayed as the actual posts. This way, on the list the entries will be displayed with checkboxes next to them offering the ability to easily PROTECT/ MAKE PRIVATE/ MAKE PUBLIC multiple posts at a time.

    Thanks and keep up the good work! You guys have been making/adding a lot of helpful things lately.

  • I’m a lifetime premium member, and I really don’t care for all the new bells and whistles that have been added to xanga, especially since it’s really compromised the integrity of something as simple as showing photos. Is somebody on that? My pictures aren’t showing, and those that do take forever to download and show. My connection is lightning fast and my photos aren’t big. I’d like to know that Xanga isn’t selling their real supporters short just so they can compete with the myspace revolution. Please get someone on this problem. Thanks.

  • Why would I want to upgrade to premium since I use 0.1mb picts. It will take a lot of pictures to fill up my alloted space and I can delete them before I run out of room?
    I check my footprints and a lot of unknown traffic comes from this blog coment page. These visitors suck, they don’t leave coments and they remain anomomous. I can see where some folks want privacy for their photos, but basically if things could be marked private there will be a trade in porno maybe.

    I think there should be a watermark on all photos that can be copied, the mark will slow down stealing of pictures and is better than no watermarks.

  • I would like your help on something please. I don’t know if I am coming tothe right person. If i’m not, send this to the right person. There is a person with xanga name coming_second2 who has joined christian blogrings and then looked up the people in then to tell them that God isn’t real. He did it to my friend’s site. He comments saying that God isn’t real. He even said to my friend that he does this and he likes it.  I know a lot of people who have flagged him. Could you please do something about this? I fear that he might go too far.

  • Hey guys, you are all doing an awesome job with the photoblogs and tags and everything, but this is the real burning question:  Will there ever be a modification that will allow non-Xanga members comment on our sites?  I can see from my footprints that dozens of readers trot across my blog from many different cities and countries, and I would love to hear from them and have them engage with discussions on the site.  But they can’t!  It’s tempting to move to LJ for that reason… but tell me there will be open commenting someday.  : (

  • I think it should be eaiser to post up photos in an album & use the photo links in the actual blog. I rather blog with pictures than have a photo blog with just captions. Actually blogging has more substance.

  • Hillarious.  Today there was a little justice in the world.  Thank you, Xanga.  I couldn’t have asked for it to play out any better.

    As you know, Mary, some underage girl came to your page, made false accusations that I was stalking her and other young girls, and complained that my xanga had “inappropriate” pictures and videos.  She included a link to my xanga in her comment and asked you to shut down my site.

    Well, in the meantime, other people saw her comment and linked to my xanga to see what the big deal was.  And left footprints.  So I followed the footprints back to your page, Mary, and saw the false accusations against me in time to do something about it. 

    First, I copied the girl’s comment and picture, and posted it on my xanga.  Then I went to her xanga and every xanga on her subscription list, telling everyone what she did, and invited everyone to come to my site and see for themselves.  (Everyone of legal age, that is.)

    That alone would have been all the justice I could ask for.  But it gets even better.  Right after I told everyone to come to my site for the whole story, Mary, you rated my xanga EX.  And since this girl was underage, when she came to my site to see what everyone else was going to read… SHE COULDN’T GET IN.  She knew she was guilty and she knew enough to be concerned, but she couldn’t get in to see exactly what mess she was in.

    So you know what the end result of this is?  SHE had to shut down.  She shut her xanga down today.  And this is exactly the way things are supposed to work.  There are no secrets here.  This is not a place to go behind people’s backs telling lies.  This is an open and public social network.  Everybody knows what everyone is doing here, and she got caught trying to pull something dirty.

    Mary, you should make flags public.  Whenever someone flags a xanga, it should be posted on a page where everyone can see the complaint and who made it.  As long as “flaggers” can remain anonymous, they can get away with too much.  I got lucky here and found out on my own.  EVERYONE should be so lucky.

    By the way, I remade the exact same xanga that was rated EX, just so people can see what the big deal was, and it is currently unrated, so any adults are welcome to visit and you don’t need a credit card to verify your age.  Just click on the link below my comment right here.

    That is, until Mary gets ahold of this one too.  But I don’t care.  Rate it EX, shut it down, whatever.  It served its purpose.  Thank you, Xanga.  This was poetry in motion.

  • Hey, I think you should know that for quite some time, the Currently Watching thing that you can put on your site has not been working. No matter what you type in, it just shows a little box with a red X in it when you go to Currently Watching and shows no results. But the same thing you type in shows things in other categories. Can the Xanga staff please fix that? Thanks!!!

  • What the hell is up with this new “New Weblog Entry” layout?

    This is sad… Xanga; the original blog site, and indisputably still the best BLOGGING site (honestly, no one uses Myspace for writing entries) is selling out? I’ve used Xanga for two years now… and one really nice thing about it has been the fact that Xanga is completely a blog, and only a blog… and now you’re just… selling out.

    I’m not one of the people who thought you were selling out with the videos or whatever, because, honestly, you’ve always been able to do that… I mean, the only thing you did with the videos was make it a trillion times easier to get the videos into entries or on Xanga’s… well, it doesn’t matter either way since I never use the videos feature anyway… BUT THIS IS ALL BESIDE THE POINT.

    The thing is, the old “New Weblog Entry” layout was always really nice simply because… well, it just had a plan and bloggish look, which fits perfectly with Xanga… and now it’s all… ick. I mean, I really don’t mind change all that much, like your “Messages” feature or whatever, I don’t even know; that’s all good… but now you’re modernizing layouts?

    It’s really quite sad… has Xanga become so corporate and money hoggingly greedy that they feel the need to upgrade everything in order to “keep up with competition” simply because the average number of people on the site has dropped from an average 15 millionish to 10 millionish? Last time I checked, compared to a few years ago, even just FIVE million would have had everyone shooting out of their chairs.

    Basically, I suppose what I’m getting at here, this is both sad and heavily disappointing… of all the blog sites to sell out; it had to be Xanga…

    Not cool, Xanga Staff. Really not cool.

    You have only gone and changed this bloggy write thing to the new one again – I hate itttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt – It makes me totally unable to upload my day of the week picture (Which luckily I had already done yesterday)

    Grief – If it ain’t broke – Don’t fix it XangaGuys! Please put it back or at least give us the choice of which one to use – I have premium and I hate this new thing which is a complete mess and has no drop down window for me to choose the specially in order pictures I uploaded.

    In my footprints section, I’m getting a lot of people searching images on google and finding my site from really random places in the world. I just did it to myself, and some of them link to other people’s sites where I’ve left comments. Is there anyway to make it so that the people from google can’t see that? Or to delete my user pics (since I just went through and deleted them all) from google?

  • Hmmm…I want to be excited, but being as I can’t really post my photos easily (I have a Mac), I’d be way more excited if I could just use my existing tags and photos from flickr. flickr has an api that you can use to integrate flickr content into other sites, such as xanga, if xanga was to implement it. That would be web 2.0. Tags by themselves are not really web 2.0. Of course, the xanga people aren’t claiming that xanga is web 2.0, but I wish that it was. It’s lack of real integration with other services on the web is the main reason that I keep shying away from going premium. Let me bring in my photos from flickr, and let me integrate incoming RSS feeds into the body of my xanga posts, and I’d commit to the xanga platform.
