  • POST TITLES AND ADDRESSES

    Ever try to add a title to your post?  We've noticed a lot of Xangans doing just that, so Joel added an optional title field to make it easier.   Titles are auto-formatted to stand out (see my title above), but if you’re familiar with the basics of CSS, you can customize them by adding a H4 style code in your Look and Feel.

    That’s not all!  The titles you add will also be used to create cleaner web addresses for your posts.  For example, the old address for this post used to be:   http://www.xanga.com/item.aspx?user=Mary&tab=weblogs&uid=379951244.  Here’s what it looks like now:

    “Whoa, but I don’t want to add any words to the address!”  Don’t worry - if your post doesn’t have a title, we won’t add any descriptive words to the address.  And if you want a title but don’t want it to show up on the address, just leave the title field blank and add a title at the top of the weblog entry textbox!

    I like the new addresses because they’re shorter and more personal.  After all, if your site address is http://www.xanga.com/mary, it makes a lot of sense for your post addresses to start out the same way.       (Old links to your existing posts will always work, so you don't have to make any changes.)

    you should consider adding a feature that would allow you to categorize entries by subject matter (ex. home, school, work, love).  combined with a search feature, it would be a great way to allow people to follow particular topics within one xanga site.

  • I think you guys should add TAGS to the posts next, kind of like they do in livejournal, because I have 2+ years worth of a xanga, and it'd be 100 times easier to find the post I'm looking for if they're tagged.

  • Someone else mentioned that they had this problem too - but I had a smiley script (javascript) on my site that had about 15 or so different smiley faces. It's suddenly gone now. Any explanation? Will it be back soon, or what?

  • Finally! I can't believe that it's taken this long to get up to the basics of what other sites have to offer for free. I wanted to bail on xanga but I'm a premium user and I don't want to lose my $$$ investment. :(    Hope you guys/gals are working on improving the comment posting to allow non-xangans to post but adding the security feature of word verification.

  • this idea is decent

    however, the standard formatting doesn't work for my site and it probably won't work for many others. i mean, all it is doing is bolding the text.

    if there was an option to change the formatting automatically on it it would be more useful. something that would let us change the size, color, font, and BIU of the titles would make it worth our time, but for now it is still easier to make our own.

  • it's nice to have cleaner web addresses, but the actual posting and look of the title is the same as just adding bold + increase font + skip two lines in regular text. boooo.

    Isn't there a way to generate the title next to the date? or right below the date outside of the text box to make it actually LOOK like a title?

    how about adding a "recent posts" list module on the side so that people can browse your entries by the "new and awesome!!" title feature? that would actually make it seem more "new and awesome!!"

  • sounds great thanks!  Can you incorporate our titles into a "tag" feature?  I think you should add  "Subject Tags" so a search engine can bring them up, like Google's Blog search engine.  Keep up the good work!

    although it very slightly gives users the oportunity to make their entries more 'personal', I believe instead of making add-on's like this, you should be more creative and use innovation.

  • I like how you guys decided to add the title but I think it needs to be more distinguished from the rest of the entry. It just looks like someone bolded the text. You could do far more customization from CSS. I think you guys should put the title next to the date like Livejournal's.

  • There seems to be quite an issue with protected sites (ie - protected posts only) lately.  For two I'm sub'd to, I can only get on their site when I'm in my sub browser and click on comment.  Clicking their name won't let me in.... it just brings me to their front page.
    Is there something you can do to fix this?  I know the site owners are getting pretty peeved.

I have alot of readers, (wish they commented more...) and I often want to title posts so others can find them more easily. Thanks for this change.

  • Hey, thanks for responding to my question... I'm really impressed! The only problem is, the color comments code still doesn't seem to be working... I created the text, copied it to my clipboard, then put it into the website stats section of my 'look and feel', then checked the code against the one generated on the color comments page (it was fine), saved it but... nothing happened. It's not a huge deal, but I'm just puzzled because it was working fine a few days ago (?)

    im dont think its very useful.. i think its better just for us to make titles our selves.. so that we can make it any size font we like, and bold italic and underline the titles. we cant do that with this new feauture.

    thatd be easier, and instead of just clickin a bunch of times we can just to that to visit comments.

  • Yay, titles. I stopped manually putting them in since it was so much trouble... glad they're back. I'm also liking the URL change, the one before was getting messy! It's interesting how each entry is straight HTML now instead of being generated on-the-fly via ASP... wonder how that works.

    Question: Any chance that a find/replace feature could be added to the editor?  If you're wondering what I'm talking about, go into Word and hit [CTRL][F].  There's a box that pops up that let's you locate any given text that you put in the field.  The replace tab lets you not only find the text, but also replace it.  Anyway, something like that would be a useful feature to add as well.

    Just a thought.

  • Oinx, if you have a custom header you can add this to your CSS:
    h4 { margin-bottom: 3px;}

    Just adjust the "3px" value according to how much space you want between the title and the entry.

    Thanks to the Xanga team for adding this. It's so much better than manually changing the font (if combined with CSS of course :-p)

    i'm having problems with my xanga. (i dont know if its my web browser). It keeps saying that I'm logged in and won't let me log out.  And it seems like the pages that are displayed when i'm 'logged in' are old ones that havn't been refreshed. So when I press refresh on my browser, it will display the updated pages, and show that i am signed out. BUT... for some reason, when i do sign in, it asks me for my signin info when i'm browsing my friends' pages. And for one site in particular, it asks me to sign in to view comments, and will repost the previous comment i left (yesterday i think) automatically. It's really annoying. Can you fix it?

    I was wondering if you can help me ... I had a protected xanga site (Adastra_Peraspera) a while back, up until Oct. 14 this year. I started it last year in Oct. 2004. Anyway, I accidentally locked myself out of it because I was changing the password. I know that you can check your email addresses and find the password (via Forgot Password? options) but the problem is- when I registered for this site, I put in an email address which I now forgot ...   • Xanga needs a minor change that will majorly help:

    Eprops are a joke. no one uses them.  Why? because the default setting for a comment is "2 e-props"  so everyone just leaves it like that.

    Make the default "Comment only."  that way, only exceptional posts will get people to actually click "2 e-props" or "1 e-prop"

  • It'd be wonderful if there were an internal search bar that would allow users to search within their own archives for specific posts. Similar to Google Desktop in its usage, this way, users won't have to attempt recalling when they wrote what and then sifting through months or years of postings.

    okay, i hope you check this, even though i think titles are great, and that it is great you are improving xanga, there is one obvious flaw in it all. it is RIDICULOUS that you cannot use usernames of xangas that have already been deleted. for example, if i had a xanga named http://www.xanga.com/Tinkerbell and i deleted it, someone else wants that username and is DENIED because it has already been used AND DELETED. this is absurd. many ppl resort to xanga and many have made numerous xangas, and before long, people will have to make ABSURDLY LONG addresses because other have either been in use or have been deleted!!! you should SERIOUSLY change this. Plus, i think its better if you only allowed one person ONE xanga...how? well, have an email checker, if the person with the same email decides to make another account, deny it, this way, you can keep xanga in order. please tell me what you think of my suggestions, my site is http://www.xanga.com/TERRORISTxATTACK

  • Hey, I have a suggestion. Is there any way that you could make a search option on xanga so if you want to look through your metro, but you're really only interested in people your age, you could filter it out?

    and maybe you could add schools so that people could look up classmates. I know that there are blogrings, but then you get multiple rings for one school, and if it there was one central search engine per school that would be really cool.

    i have a few different blogs online and xanga is by far my favorite, however there are some options that other blogs have that xanga doesn't, and if you added those, then there'd be no stoppin ya!

    1. go to your private xanga.

    2. go to SAFE MODE, sign in.

    3. go to WEBLOG ENTRIES.

    4. delete all the entries generated by EXODUS, and leave only entries you wrote. it should be the top 7-8 entries.

    5. that's it, you're done.

    After you do that you get your site and all that stuff back

    3. go to WEBLOG ENTRIES.

    4. delete all the entries generated by EXODUS, and leave only entries you wrote. it should be the top 7-8 entries.

    5. that's it, you're done.

    After you do that you get your site and all that stuff back

  • ever since uv come out with this ive been wanting a search for my xanga site that i can type keywords that search my title, entry, or both (depending on wut i want) and brings up a list of each of those posts.  in this way, if there was an event that i wanted to go down memory lane on, i only have to type in a keyword and not have to try and find the exact date.  is it possible for the xanga staff to start working on this?  also, is there an official comment box that i can do this in?

  • I would just like to say thank you for updating the site, but It's getting really anoying that every time I go to make a simple post there is something New. The new text box takes like 5 min to load and then whenever I scroll or try to make a new paragraph it takes another 15 min to reset itself. With so much extra stuff it's taking to long to just write a simple "my day was ok" post.

    I liked xanga cause it wasn't like livejournal with all the rich text mode/not rich text mode annoyances.

    Although I am a little upset thank you again for updating it,  the ability to change the color and font is great and I will continue to use xanga cause It's just an awesome journal site.

    I just ahve a question...I don't know if anyone's asked this or if this is the right place to ask, but could xanga introduce a feature where a user could Search through their own entries?

    Lets say I had entries about my dog, and I wanted to find the first entry I posted about dog. I could just search all my entries for "dog" and bring up all those entries, then view them.

    P.S. I pulled an all nighter tonight, and xanga helped me get through it.

  • Hi, umm I would like to make a suggestion. Is it possible if you could make a printer-friendly version of xanga? I have been a faithful member (...lolz) for more than 2 years and would like to print all of my entries into a book with your credits on it. Copying and pasting them are just too complicated since I have to delete some tables and stuff repeatedly. I suppose other xanga users would agree to that as well.

Now we cant because the sites are now shutdown.   • Site has been shut down for violation of Xanga's eligibility requirements...

    Minimum age requirement is 13 in order to create a Xanga site. Xanga must have a software program continuously running which is checking on the dates entered as birth dates.

    If you enter a date later than today's date in 1993, your site may get shut down. If a site gets shut down for another reason, it's possibly a "bug" in the program.

    You can still get your old entries by:

    Create a new account and Login to your new account, make sure you click box remember password.

    Now paste the following link in your browser

    http://www.xanga.com/Private/SubscribeTo.aspx?user=xxxxxx

    xxxxxx = your Old_account_name

    Click “yes” to subscribe, then click close window

    Then click this link to read your old subscription

    http://www.xanga.com/Private/subs.aspx

    You can read all your old entries this way, and copy the ones you wanted.

  • I know this is off the topic, but, nobody seems to be answering me in the help section or anywhere else.  I'd like to kno why my second site has been shut down.  I try to log on and it tell me I havent reached the eligibility requirements.  Some people have been talking about being underage.  But I kno that isnt an issue because I knew I was fine when I created it. 

    Now. If at all the site can be resurrected, will all the information from day one be on there?? If no, why not?  I will be devastated...

  • ok i have a problem i have to use this s.n that i made awhile ago that i was going to shut down but decided not to..and i made this s.n because i liked the name and i try to sign in last night and it said that it was frozen to protect something and try and sign on ago later..well i just went to bad cause it was already 3:00am and now i can't sign in..

  • The titles are awesome!

    I have a suggestion. I think it would be cool if you could delete your own comments that you have written. Like if you wrote a comment on someone else's site and then you realized that you acidentally typed something you didn't want to, you could,  delete your own comment(s) if you wanted to.

    And, somebody might have said this already but it would be really cool if you could change the color of your title from your weblog.

  • What I don't like about the titles (and it's extremely annoying) is that some people use titles as the first line of their entry.  So when I open the email I don't see the title, and it just looks silly cause it starts in the middle of the sentence.  That's all.  Please fix it, thanks.
